Get yourself a thick (4-6 mil) scuba hood- that fits right- and NRS Toaster Mitts. My hood is so thick and warm that I have a bigger helmet to accommodate it fit-wise. Many long deep rides, and my hair is practically dry. Even handpaddling the mittens are warm enough. Very warm with a stick.
The lighter weight hoods and beanies from the paddling world are not warm enough for extensive Winter submersion IMHO. They are warm enough for winter surface boating. I use them during the time between long sleeves and short sleeves. A warm melon is a happy melon.
Cut the "flange" off of the hood, which makes it come down and terminate at the shoulders and collar bone.
