Hey y'all,
Anyone have a recommendation for ear plugs that keep water out, but allow you to hear at the same time? Hoping to spend a lot of time under water this summer and need to keep water intake to a minimum.

Preciatcha,
Drew

I use the wax, for me it keeps the water out better than the Doc's earplugs. You will however need to brush up on your lip reading if you go with the wax.

I've used 'Earplanes' with decent success. They keep water out, you can hear reasonable ok, can get them locally at a drugstore or Walmart, and don't cost alot. I have some degraded hearing so putting anything in my ears further reduces my ability to hear.

Shameless plug. I carry at kayakoutfitting.com (the site that sponsors this site) Howard Leight Clarity 656. They are rated as 21db but they have a hollow shaft and are very conducive to hearing voice at pretty close to original volume. I have been using them for 4 years now and love em.

Anything with a cord will minimize the amount of loosing that happens. Cords have their own hassles getting tangled in your helmet straps but it is a better alternative to loosing them.
I loved the pair of docs pro plugs I bought once but lost one despite the cord and haven't been able to bring myself to spend that much again.

I always try to keep some of the silicone blob style ones stuffed into my helmet liner as a backup. This style is perhaps one of the worst if your goal is to hear voice at normal volume, but they are great for if you find yourself trying to sleep at a campground in the vicinity of rowdy squirt boaters.

Would like to try those howard leights out. Tried similar styles in the past and they didn't seem to keep water out and were a bit invasive. I've settled into the silicone wax style and suggest splitting them in half and stuffing them in your ear despite what the directions say. Everyone's ears are different though.

Earplugs are mandatory pieces of gear for me and will sacrifice gray foam outfitting to fashion some plugs if I find myself without the silicone. Who cares what kayakers are saying anyway?

i second the Howard Leight plugs. I've been using the "quiet," or "quiet flight" plugs by Leight since maybe 2006, and they're the best. You can get a pack of 20 or 30 of them for maybe 5 bucks. They're bright orange so you can easily find them in the bottom of your gear bag or your pocket. You can't hear shit with them in, but who cares. Wiseass comments in the eddy are meant to be screamed, anyhow.
